Basics and features of welding with MR-3 and MR-3C electrodes
MR-3 and MR-3C electrodes are types of welding electrodes used in the manual metal arc welding process. They are designed for use in welding low-carbon steels and are commonly used in the construction and repair of structures, pipelines, and machinery.
The MR-3 electrode is a mild steel electrode that features a high-titanium type coating that provides excellent arc stability and low spatter. It produces a smooth, stable arc, and the welds have good mechanical properties.
The MR-3C electrode is an improved version of the MR-3 and is designed to provide improved arc stability and low spatter. It also features a high-titanium type coating that provides excellent arc stability and low spatters. The electrode produces a smooth, stable arc and the welds have good mechanical properties.
Both MR-3 and MR-3C electrodes are easy to use, and they are suitable for welding in all positions. They provide a low hydrogen deposit, which reduces the risk of cracking and ensures good-quality welds. They are also suitable for welding in a variety of industries such as construction, shipbuilding, and heavy equipment manufacturing
Basics of electric welding
Electric current is supplied to the electrode and the part to be welded. When the welded product touches, the welding current is transmitted. Due to the fact that the welding arc has up to 7 thousand degrees, the edges of the welded part melt, forming a welding "bath". Together with the edges, the electrode melts, and its coating protects it from the influence of the environment. A slag is formed at the weld site, which also protects against external defects. Moisture, moisture, air - all this can adversely affect welding.
The main component in welding is the welding machine. There are many types, from manual to automatic. Some of them are powered by electricity, others by gas. They most often use devices for these types of welding:
- Hand rainbow.
- Semi-automatic.
- Automatically.
- Argon.
Manual arc welding is the first and most common form. It is used not only in production and construction but also in everyday life. This type is convenient to use and does not require special environmental conditions. When using a hand-held device, special electrodes are used.

They are selected according to the manufactured part. Welded parts can vary from 2 mm to 20 mm or more. However, it is worth remembering to remove the penetration edges.
Semi-automatic welding is often used when joining thin metals. However, in production, where thick metals are welded, such welding is carried out. It is worth considering that in this form they use a special welding wire.
Automatic devices are used in industrial areas. More often, these can be factories and other enterprises that are involved in the continuous production of the same structures.
Argon welding is performed with gas. When working with such a device, a special wire is used, which is melted using a gas torch.
Description of the MR-3 electrode
The welding electrode is a rod made of different metals and covered with a special coating. The composition of the rod, as well as the coating, will depend on their purpose. Some may be for steel, others for softer metal. For example, there are electrodes for cast iron and copper.
Electric welding rods can differ not only in composition but also in diameter. Usually, welding works use electrodes with a diameter of 3-4. But there are cases when a rod with a thicker diameter may be required and vice versa.
There are also types that are not intended for welding parts, but rather for cutting them. However, such electrodes require special machines and electrode holders.
Due to the fact that there are a large number of metals and alloys, there are many types of electrodes. The most common are:
- SSSI.
- MC-5.
- MR-3 and MR-3C (E46).

SSSI is one of the most versatile types. They have a good and durable alloy that gives strength to the details. However, it is better to use them for people who have good knowledge of electric welding.
TSU-5 perfectly welded parts. However, due to their cost and rapid burning, they are used in rare and particularly important cases. For example, such rods weld the root of the pressure pipe.
The MP-3 and MP-3C have more practical rods. They do not have an increased bursting or breaking load, but they are suitable for ordinary type of electric welding.
Features of the MR-3 and MR-3C
If you decipher the MP-3 welding electrodes, then you can understand that this is a universal core with a rutile coating. In relation to the requirement of the standard, this type refers to type E46.

The MP-3 rod is made of high-quality Sv-08 wire. According to the standard, it can have a diameter of 3 mm to 6 mm. However, there are some cases where the diameter may be smaller.
More detailed technical characteristics of the MP-3C electrodes are indicated on the packaging. In addition to their characteristics, there is a special table on the package, according to which the required welding current can be set.
Features of using MP 3
If the characteristics of MP3 electrodes have become clear, you should pay attention to their characteristics. Thanks to the universal rod, they can easily cope with welding dirty and raw metals. But remember that such material will be less durable. If we compare SSSI and MR-3, SSSI is more ductile. However, their welding arc is much more difficult to ignite.
During work, they try to use foreign brands of electrodes. But not so long ago faced with rusty material. This is where the good old MP-3s came in. While the foreign brand could not even ignite the welding arc.
Upright welding inverter of a little-known company. Also used UONI, TsL, TsU-5. But none of them could even finish. The last hope was for the MP-3, and as it turned out, not in vain. The tension in the house was reduced and only on their fishing rods it was possible to boil the part.
After the rain started, in their stupidity, they left all the electrodes on the street. They didn't get soggy, but it was almost impossible to cook. The SSSI was immediately removed to dry, and the MP-3 was still running. Let it not be so nice, but continue to cook.
More rutile is added to the MP-3C core, which contributes to better welding. But with an excess of this element, the rods have a greater amount of spatter during welding.
Summary
In summary, MR-3 and MR-3C electrodes are designed for welding low-carbon steels and are commonly used in the construction and repair of structures, pipelines, and machinery.
They provide excellent arc stability, low spatter and low hydrogen deposit, making them easy to use and suitable for welding in all positions, which makes them a great option for a variety of industries.
